My climbing partners bug me to get a better belay device. They slide down the rope when the want to stay in one place. They done feel all that great when climbing. Although great for descending, doesn't deliver when it is most expected to. My climbing partners don't feel safe and they both weigh about 85-90 pounds.

I just started rock climbing with my fiancee and the reason I got the belay device is because it is easy to use. This is what we learned with when we rented so I sticked with it. Great buy, durable, strong and simple to use.

I got this when I started getting really into climbing in July 2007 and I've been using it ever since, it's worked awesome for everything from top roping to lead belaying. About the only thing I haven't done with this yet is rappel, although from word-of-mouth the ATC handles it like a champ. All in all I'll never buy a different non-locking belay device.

Its all you need. Simple easy great for belay and rappels. I have a partner who has a high friction atc and he never uses it this is all you need.

Merchant response: The Black Diamond ATC has been a belay device staple for decades. Sliding down the rope sounds like rope stretch or your belaying technique may be a little too casual. Either way...if you know how to use the ATC properly it works like a charm!
