I needed protection for the sharp parts of the ice axe because it was doing a lot of damage in my luggage. Improvised wraps did not do the job. Now I keep it permanently on, even while hanging on the pack until I actually use the axe. The main problem is with not losing it. The short cord does the job of keeping it on the tip just barely. The protector does not fit tight on my BD Raven Pro tip. Wiggling would not mattter if it could be attached safely to the axe. Manufacturer recommends using the prusik knot. It just does not work on the smooth metalic shaft. So I improvise by tying it with the additional cord all the way to the head of the axe. Also, I have not used it in the luggage yet, but the tip of the protector does not seem as dull as it could/ should be. I feel that it can still do some damage inside the rough handled luggage.
