Comments about BLACK DIAMOND Outlaw Backpack:

This pack seems like a really nice design. The materials are durable, I like the simplicity, and the low weight. I was about to buy it, but luckily decided to try it on first. After stuffing it with the little weight bags at EMS, and donning the pack, I discovered the fatal flaw (at least for me). The back-panel has a nifty zippered opening to access the pack when you have skis/board on. The problem is that the design of this panel is faulty. When the pack is full, the panel gets pushed out, like in a suitcase with expanding sides. What you have then, is the sharp protruding bottom edge of the back panel zipper which does not lay flush with the waist belt section below it. It sticks right into your lumbar area. Since this is a winter pack, and will probably be stuffed to the gills most of the time, I can't see this not being an issue. The Kode 30, while a little more cluttered/complicated and heavy, was far more comfortable. The Kode also has a zippered back panel, but the whole sheet unzips, and the back panel is continuous and shaped to conform to your spine - a much better design in my opinion. Before buying this pack, I seriously recommend filling it up all the way, and trying it on! It's too bad really, because everything else about the pack is very nice.
