Comments about BLACK DIAMOND Raven Pro Ice Axe:

I must have spent 3 hours trying to figure out what length axe to buy. New school, old school, who knows. I am 5'10" tall and selected the 65 mm axe. There are times when it would be nice if it were twice as long to hit something firm when punching through the snow crust, but this is not a trekking pole, it's a mountaineering safety tool, and for that, it is excellent.

Comments about BLACK DIAMOND Raven Pro Ice Axe:

I took this ice axe with me on a winter ascent of Mt Washington. Also, I had used it several times on some lesser peaks prior to the Mt Washington trip.

This axe is perfect for that sort of mountaineering trip. It's lightweight, well-balanced, and easy to carry. I used the axe in a variety of ways, including cane, dagger (high and low), and anchor techniques. In each position, the axe preformed well. The smooth shaft was ideal for penetrating the deeper snow drifts, yet was easy to hold. I found no need for a leash.

Finally, since most people, including myself seem to be unsure about the length. I'm 5'9" and found the 65cm length to be ideal for Mt Washington.

Comments about BLACK DIAMOND Raven Pro Ice Axe:

This is so much lighter than my ten-year old alpine axe it is replacing. The shaft is very light and the head of the axe is solid, as it should be. Will be great for low incline glacier and snow travel. I wish it came in a slightly shorter length, since I do not think that you need to have an excessively long alpine axe.

Comments about BLACK DIAMOND Raven Pro Ice Axe:

Super lightweight, hardly noticeable at all on your backpack and doesn't tire your arm while walking with it. Had the displeasure to have to use it for a self-arrest at 14.000ft while descending mt Whitney and I can safely say I wouldn't be writing this review had I not had it with me. Excellent tool, great quality, it won't disappoint.

Comments about BLACK DIAMOND Raven Pro Ice Axe:

So I am new to mountaineering and have not yet had occasion to use this tool on the mountain yet. That being said, is it an awesome Axe for general mountaineering purposes. It's every bit as good as the Raven, but lighter.

Be sure to get the right length. The tip should line up with your ankle bone when the head is held in your hand at your side. I am 6'1" and the 65cm version is perfect for me.

Comments about BLACK DIAMOND Raven Pro Ice Axe:

I used this mountaineering axe going up Mt. Washington, NH this winter. It was very light, felt solid, and performed well. It has a stainless steel head and tip with an aluminum alloy shaft. I plan on taking it on many more winter climbs. I am 5'11" with long arms and got the 70cm axe for moderately-angled slopes.
