Comments about LA SPORTIVA Trango Prime Mountaineering Boots:
The real question about this boot is why they sell it when it fills the exact same function as the already existing, and well liked, Trango Extreme Evo Light. To add to the confusion, the names of the two boots are alot alike. The best I could figure out, after searching around on the web, is that the Prime uses a generic waterproof barrier and primaloft insulation whereas the Extreme uses Goretex waterproofing along with goretex brand insulation. Otherwise, from what I've read the boots are bascially the same. Both, I hear, hike well and have very flexible ankles but very stiff soles. The Prime is very easy to walk in by the way. So why does LaSportiva sell two high end insulated ultralight technical boots that are nearly identical? I think its purely a business decision based on dealings with Goretex. Goretex demands that Lasportiva use gortex brand insulation if they use a goretex waterproof barrier. However, I read that LaSportiva wanted to use Primaloft, which they say drys better and is warmer, and therefore couldn't use a goretex liner. Or, perhaps LaSportiva thinks Goretex was overcharging for thier products, so they made a goretex free boot to improve thier future negotiating position? Personally I think the latter, but who knows. At any rate, the rumor is that the Trango Prime isn't really waterproof since it lacks a goretex liner. I've heard that people are having a hard time getting details from the company about what type of waterproof liner the boots actually have. La Sportiva advises applying teckwik waterproofing to the Prime. I did this and then held the boots under water, in my sink, until I felt too bored and silly to continue. After a few mintues of being submerged the boots were completely dry. The material of the boots didn't absorb any water, they didn't wet out, nothing. They seem pretty waterproof. I'll know more after I take them to the mountains. I'll be curious in the future to see if LaSportiva dumps thier goretex products or dumps the Prime and just sticks with the Extreme line.
