Comments about THULE 835 Hull-a-Port Pro Kayak Carrier:

Nice, functional design. Not a perfect fit for all boats. Fittings rusted quickly after first use, liberally coating my new car's roof with rust. Research at EMS stores, among kayakers, and other kayak stores suggests this a consistent problem with this rack system. Only way to use it is to replace nuts, bolts, etc. with Stainless Steel. Would be better if Thule simply used appropriate materials for this expensive rack system. BTW Yakima BowDown rack seems to avoid this problem and provides a more flexible fit for a wider array of kayaks.

Comments about THULE 835 Hull-a-Port Pro Kayak Carrier:

I had the non-folding Yakima carrier before getting this one. The Yakima carriers are a better fit onto round and square rack bars, the Thule fit oval or aero bars better. They will work on other shapes, but that's what they are best designed for. This Thule carrier is solid, has good padding in all the right places, and holds a boat well. I don't like the straps that come with it because of the slip-over rubber covers that are either not helping if they are up the strap, or are on the way when over the metal buckle. The Yakima straps are better. But overall, the Thule is the better carrier so I use it with aftermarket straps. A tip: thread the straps through the top of the carrier before loading your boat so they are draped down the side of the vehicle, and when loading, drape them over the boat and lift it into place on the carrier. You will then be able to easily reach the straps without having to feed them over or around your boat later.

Comments about THULE 835 Hull-a-Port Pro Kayak Carrier:

I bought this for my 12ft kayak last year after using the foam blocks only. (I'm here looking for something else now!) Thought I would get something that cradles the boat better (sometimes when I'd cinch it down on the blocks the hull would buckle)and I liked that it folded down. But this thing is NOT for woman on her own (unless you are really strong) or you have a high profile vehicle. My boat is 50 lbs and has fallen on me three times now while I try to get in on the rack from the back of my RAV4. I gotta get something else - the roller Slipstream looks like a better match for me. Also, I agree about the screws/nuts to attach the holder to your factory rack. What a PITA! :) Lesson learned.

I got this and instantly had rust stains all over my vehicle. Overall I am happy with it, but Thule needs to do something about the rust. I am recommending it, but with the caveat above.

Comments about THULE 835 Hull-a-Port Pro Kayak Carrier:

This is a great rack for any Kayak, it went on easy, and once the boat was loaded held prefect. I have played around with foam pads, and other racks for years, and noticed the time spent on the tie down the kayak took to much time, and depending how you did it would always get the indention in the bottom of the kayak, after a long drive in the hot sun. It attaches and makes loading the boat easy, leting me fit two boats on a small honda accord roof.

The only reason I gave it 4 stars was the face that there is no lock down for the kayak rack to the roof rack, which when living in Brooklyn NY comes into factor do to the ease of stealing it. Besides that its great

Comments about THULE 835 Hull-a-Port Pro Kayak Carrier:

The hull-a-port pro is generally easy to install. The fact that it folds flat when not in use is a great feature for those with taller vehicles. Overall I like this product. My only concerns are that the kayak does not seem to sit as securely in the rack as it did in my old rack and the installation instructions did not make sense. When I called Thule customer support to get clarification on the installation instructions, I was immediately put into voicemail and it took over 24 hours for someone to get back to me.

Just got the hull-a-port pro and was amazed at how easy it was to get together and put on. Holds my Kayak and is sturdy for its appearance. Cons are for the Xterra where you need the longer bolts in order to get onto the cross bars. Minor thing but would be nice if they were added.

Comments about THULE 835 Hull-a-Port Pro Kayak Carrier:

I bought this after-market carrier to haul my new 12' kayak that weighs about 65 pounds. Installation of this product on the Thule rack went smoothly. I would have liked to have seen a few more "don't install this way" pictures in the book - perhaps I was simply distracted by the kids running around the yard, but I had to take off the rack and rotate it 180 degrees.

It would be really nice if the manual actually included the "to-scale" representation of the different sizes of carriage bolts included for different types of rack systems. Pay attention to the carriage bolts you pick because the different lengths are for different rack systems! You do NOT end up using all of the carriage bolts they include in the packaging.

I use a really small step stool (I'm 5' 11") to reach the kayak on top of my Jeep Wrangler Rubicon. Without the stool, I'm just a tad too small to properly lift and seat the kayak in the rack.

My rails have locks on them, but these carriers do not appear to have a lock system - I'm nervous about leaving them on my vehicle at the airport for my extended business trips! To be safe, especially given how expensive these things are, I'm going to have to take the time to take the two sets off before parking at the airport, and then put two sets back on when I get back home and go kayaking. What a pain! This is why I give the system 4 stars instead of 5!

This is a great rack. Easy to install and use. The fact that it folds flat and can be left on is a wonderful bonus. I had foam pices that I used previously to put my kayak on the roof and we found an easy way to use those with this rack and have 2 kayaks on . Takes a few minutes to load and a few seconds to unload.

Comments about THULE 835 Hull-a-Port Pro Kayak Carrier:

This model is worth the extra cost over the already good hull-a-port J type carrier. I returned the latter types for a pair of the pro models for garage access. The pro is very practical and makes an impromptu kayak excursion that much easier. Thule is not cheap, but is reliable and well thought out.
