I've only used the Steripen on one overnight trip, so far, but it worked great, for the most part.
Make sure the water sensors are completely dry before you put it in the water, or it won't work. I kept getting a "sad face" indicator and couldn't figure out why. (we were in the middle of the WMNF on a 90 degree day... It gave us a little scare)
It might be better to get one without the water sensor and manually time the dose. They're cheaper too.

I really like the compactness and fast purification of the Steripen, but I cannot recommend this as a reliable means to purify water. Steripen claims 100 treatments for a set of batteries, but I routinely got 8-10 treatments (despite taking the batteries out between uses and sleeping with the batteries to keep them warm when backpacking).

Product worked well for the first few days. Unfortunately, when I went from the city to the trails, it stopped alogether. Battery replacement didn't help. Interestingly, it started to work about a week later, but by that time, it was too late.
