If you work or play outdoors this should be near enough in case of an emergency. It takes up little room and makes life so much easier when things go wrong. As a Maine State Guide I carry one, and anyone whose taken Wilderness First Responder training or the like, knows how creative splinting can become when you are in the back country. Having a sam splint on hand makes for one less decision you need to make when designing a splint, making the patient more comfortable, more quickly and keeping the injury stable before more appropriate medical care is available.

Everyone who likes to walk very far from help/transportation should carry a Sam's Splint. Most hiking injuries are sprained or broken ankles, and the Sam's Splint will help you make it back to civilization without having to call for a professional evacuation. Mine stays in my daypack, for short walks or long hikes.
