Comments about HURRICANE KAYAKS Tampico 140 S Kayak:

I was looking for a 14-foot light touring kayak to learn and grown with, and purchased this from my local EMS store because they were able to let me test paddle it first. This kayak is 10-lbs lighter than comperable 14-foot poly kayaks. I test paddled five 14-footers before choosing this one, and can't emphasize enough how important test paddling is, because each kayak will fit the paddler and handle differently. Although the seat is about as basic as it gets, it fits me very well in combination with the position of the molded in knee braces and foot pads (when they are properly adjusted). So far I've paddled in Hingham Harbor and the Plymouth Inner Harbor (both in MA) on good weather days. Primary stability isn't great but this is to be expected with the round hull and light weight. However, it is easy to keep it level using light pressure on the foot pedals and knees for microbalancing. Secondary stability is very good in flat water, light sea swells and light powerboat wakes. Turning is adequate for a 14-footer and requires proper edging and paddling technique, but this is to be expected giving its very good tracking ability. It lighter weight means it will ride more on top of waves than than plow through them, and once you get the hang of it (and it doesn't take long) it is actually fun surfing smaller waves. I purchased this kayak with a light weight Werner Camano paddle which has a carbon fiber shaft and fiberglass blades. With the light hull and this paddle, touring is a pleasure not a burden. Overall I'd give it an A-.

Comments about HURRICANE KAYAKS Tampico 140 S Kayak:

I have this kayak and love it. I tried out numerous other kayaks and kept coming back to this one. I've had it about a year and am very happy with my purchase. It cuts through the water and is very easy to handle, even for this beginner.
The reviewer who pointed out that the picture is of the 140L is correct. They are also correct about the seat. I'm happy with the weight of the 140S but the seat isn't as comfortable as that in the 140L.

Comments about HURRICANE KAYAKS Tampico 140 S Kayak:

Have not received item yet, will update review once it arrives, but one should note the following corrections. This information is directly from the manufacturer:1. the pic shown is the 140L which does not have the knee braces and the cockpit is larger.2. the cockpit size is actually 33" x 18"In addition, the seat in the 140S is "performance" oriented, not "comfort". There is apparently a rudder option, don't need one now but nice to know I can add it in the future if I get on the open water more often. I've heard great things about this kayak online. Both EMS and Hurricane were fantastic in helping me make my decision. [...]

Comments about HURRICANE KAYAKS Tampico 140 S Kayak:

I bought this kayak after quite a bit of research. I'd rented a number of shorter, cheaper boats and decided that they were not a suitable reference. I'd been considering the 140S for a while when EMS offered a 20% promotion, which clinched the deal. I wanted a boat that would offer good intermediate performance that I could grow into, and the Tampico was just the ticket. Also, the boat's finish is very nice and the shade of green is awesome. I've had the boat out 7 or 8 times now. It tracks well and feels fast. My only two complaints are 1) the hatch covers don't seal real well (water got in when practicing wet entries), and 2) the shock cords for the seat back are quickly fraying where they attach to the clips. I'll have to see if they can be repaired or replaced soon.
