Comments about OSPREY Manta 20 Hydration Pack:
I am a college student/camp counselor/avid hiker and I wanted an all around durable and small bag for everyday use. Two years ago I bought a larger bag (Kestrel 38) for extended hikes, short backpacking trips, and overnight adventures and was extremely pleased with the product. The Manta 20 has proven no different. It is lightweight, comfortable, durable, and fits the essentials: wallet, keys, phone, rain jacket, first aid kit, cpr mask, knife, snacks, and of course, my water supply. The bag is small and trying to fit bulkier objects into it will decrease available space. If you intend on larger objects, go for the 25L or 30L variants.
Hydration system: I should disclose that before owning this bag, my hydration system was simply a water bottle, therefore I am unable to provide any comparison to other systems. However, I am very pleased with the reservoir's functioning. Despite many reviews claiming to have reservoir leaks, I have experienced no such issue after several weeks of 8 hr/day use. The only other *minor* complaint I ran across was a leaky bite valve, if left in the "on" position. Those reviews are correct, there is a small amount of leakage if the bite valve is left on, but that seems to be a useless critique. When you are done, simply turn it to the "off" position. Problem solved. Also, the magnetic clip is just plain fun to mess with, and if you work with children be prepared to show them how it works...again and again and again.
Adjustability/Fit: The Manta 20 is an Osprey product. That being said, it fits like a dream, which is what you pay for. I spent five minutes with the straps (pack and reservoir loaded of course) and was ready to go. As the following day progressed and my water supply dwindled, I was easily able to adjust the pack on the fly. For those ordering online, it is not very easy to see the panel facing the wearers back. The suspension of the pack takes the entirety of the actual storage compartment off your back. Instead, you back is pressed against a taut mesh system that allows for superior air flow. This means that your back and backpack do not get soaked through with sweat. I wore the pack outside, all day in temperatures around 107 and a heat index approaching 115. I did sweat of course, but the pack stayed dry and I felt much better than with the more traditional style school backpack I was using.
Extras: My favorite aspect of the Osprey backpacks are the built-in rain covers. I have been caught outside in massive downpours more than once with miles to go before the nearest shelter. The rain covers have never failed to keep my essential gear dry, whether that be on a hiking trip or a walk through campus in the pouring rain.
Final Word: Backed by one of the most flexible and extensive warranties, the Osprey Manta 20 is definitely a pack worth buying. Truly the only con to buying the pack is the price. However, if you are looking for a durable, comfortable, and highly functional bag that will withstand daily use, year after year, Osprey packs are the way to go.
Service and delivery comments:
Easy to navigate the site, prompt delivery, a good deal on the product, I have little else to say, as I had no problems with the company to deal with customer service.
