Comments about Eastern Mountain Sports EMS Shanty Tent:
I camp a lot. I used this to camp/ backpack in 20-60degree weather in the mountains in washington state. Wished I'd chosen a tent with windows I could seal with zippers because it was very cold at night and this tent design allowed breezes to enter. This design is better for warmer weather.
I never got to appreciate a view through the screen windows because the fly is something you stake down & not easily put on & off.
The fly vestibule provided a great place to put on/ take off/ store my hiking shoes.
Size reality check: This tent provided enough room for me on top of my mummy bag, my 65 liter pack next to it, and a very small amount of wiggle room in between.
This tent packs light and small. I am able to easily fit my inflatable sleeping pad inside this tent bag along with the tent.
Sets up easily/ all the poles are already connected and easily snap into place.
The floor is made out of the same material as the walls. I've never before seen that in a tent and am super glad I brought along extra tarp to put under it.
For the price, I can't in good conscious recommend this tent to another person. I wouldn't put the value of this thing over $70.

Comments about Eastern Mountain Sports EMS Shanty Tent:
I recently purchased two Shantys for 2 day- one night backpacking trip with my daughter; a tent for each of us. The weather was perfect-- 70s and dry during the day, low 50's to high 40's at night. It is, simply stated, the easiest tent I've ever assembled. It had plenty of room for one person (I think it would be a very tight fit for two adults)and performed flawlessly. Kept out the rain (just a short shower) and the bugs (even kept out the sweet ants!). With all that mesh, and the rainfly guywired out, it lets in the cross-breezes. Hence, I wouldn't recommend it in cold conditions (temps below 45 degrees). Then again, it IS represented as a 3-season tent. The tent is a little on the heavy side, and I paid the price on the ascent on day two (full disclosure--My 21-year-old D-one athlete daughter didn't seem to be as affected-- hmmmm)... Be sure to get the footprint that goes with it (sold separately). It clips right onto the poles for a perfect fit that doesn't need to be anchored separately). For what it is -- a NON-ultralight easy-to-set-up reasonably priced tent) it fits the bill.

Comments about Eastern Mountain Sports EMS Shanty Tent:
I have lived in tents for months at a time, sea kayaked, hiked, bike toured and motorcycle toured on multiday trips for many years. I have owned at least 5 tents ranging from a Eureka Timberline to a North Face 5 person expedition dome. The Shanty is great little tent. It is NOT a serious mountaineering tent. It is NOT a cold weather camping tent. It is not roomy. But it sets up quickly, is sturdy, waterproof and good in moderate winds. Spend more if you are headed into challenging environments.Otherwise spend about $100 on this tent and not $60 for a piece of junk from a department store.

Comments about Eastern Mountain Sports EMS Shanty Tent:
I bought this tent to use on backpacking trips in the ADKS for my dog and I. I am 6'1 225lbs and my dog is an American Bulldog weighing 120lbs. The tent had enough room for the two of us. I bring a fan with me even on backbacking trips to sleep with, and even with the fan, condensation collected in the tent floor corners where we had our heads for the night. The rain fly was on, so maybe without the fly it wouldnt collect, but i figured with a fan for circulation it would help. It didnt, but that is the only complaint i have. It took about 3 minutes to setup total, and the same to take down. very nice little tent.

Merchant response: Thank you for your review. This tent is designed more for casual car camping, scouting trips, etc. There are certainly better tents in our line for serious backpacking that we think would be more suitable for your use. Check out the EMS Sugar Shack as one of our favorites!
