Comments about Ruff Wear RUFFWEAR Bark'n Boots Polar Trex:

The dog boots don't come with instructions, so here are a few tips to make these boots work.

Cinch the straps as tight as possible and similarly pull the shin staps tight, too.

Really wet and deep snow will cause problems, just like putting your foot in 18 inches of snow will pull your heel out of your boot. The dog is the same.

But the tighter both the strap and elastic band are pulled the better chance for keeping the boots on.

I always scan my 90-pound golden retriever's feet after he bounces into deep snow while I'm on a cross-country ski trail, just to check for boot movement. The boots will show slippage if his foot is pulling out.

A quick re-tightening usually solves the problem.

Another tip: hold down the front dew claw when putting on a front boot, to assure it doesn't get caught.

Wet, deep snow will allow a boot to be thrown off, but re-tightening resolves the issue.

Without the boots, Jack would be stopping to lick or pull ice from between his toes.

If he would stay on a snowmobile trail, instead of pouncing into snow mounds, the boots would never get loose. But's he's a golden retriever!

Comments about Ruff Wear RUFFWEAR Bark'n Boots Polar Trex:

Our 65 lb LabX has had the Grip Tex booties in the Medium size for the last 2 years, and they work and fit very well. We bought these taller boots in the same size last Nov (2010) for the colder weather and also because they looked like they would work well at preventing snow from entering the boots. These boots were a big disappointment. We say that with regret because our dog has lots of Ruffwear products and we love them (hopefully our dog does too!). As with reviews we have seen to date (none were available at the time we bought the boots because they were too new), we had issues keeping them on. They fall off immediately when she romps in deep snow. For a basic walk (no running/romping), they stay on for no longer than 20 minutes if we're lucky. The very feature we bought the boots for - the vertical length - seems to be the issue; it works with the dog to push the boots off! On the other hand, the boots are warm and well made. But they are useless when they don't stay on. We have used the boots no more than 5 times (ever hopeful) and they have been sitting in the cupboard in their box in mint condition for the last 3 months. Hopefully we can still return them.

We have a 65lb Golden Retriever. She took a size small. Strapped them as tightly as possible and the front boots were half way off less than 50' in the woods. Don't waste your time or money on these. On the bright side returns are a breeze at EMS!

            Not for my dog

Comments about Ruff Wear RUFFWEAR Bark'n Boots Polar Trex:

The boots are definitely cool to look, tough material, easy to get on, and are true to fit at but after multiple tests, Hobbes had them off his feet within minutes. As soon as he would run down the trail, the boots would go flying off (fortunately I found them in the snow bank!) Despite repeated tests, tightening straps and adjusting the boot they just would not stay on his feet. My suggestion would be to replace the two tightening mechanisms with adjustable velcro straps - everything else about the boot is great.

Comments about Ruff Wear RUFFWEAR Bark'n Boots Polar Trex:

I was planning on using these every day because my dog has allergies. I liked how high they went up and how they tightened in two places so he would be less likely to get out of them. They just take way too long to put on my dogs feet. He was even lying down quietly so I can't imagine putting these on when he's excited. To get them on without catching his dewclaws, you have to completely pull out the top drawstring and then you have to get the string back in the tiny hole while holding the little clasp open. It's just too much for every day use so I returned them and am waiting for the other Ruff Wear booties. They did seem very durable though and probably would be good for someone hiking in the snow once in a while.

We bought these for our pup last Saturday. The began falling apart the first time we put them on her. We'll be returning them this weekend. For the price, the workmanship and fit is extremely poor. Don't bother with these.

My dog hated these booties so much, he refused to wear them. He actually would not walk in them. They are stiff and they must feel so weird on puppy paws. I wanted something to help him with the salt-covered streets in the winter but this is not the solution. Before you buy them, see if you can borrow one from a friend. Some dogs really do NOT tolerate these - like mine.
