This is a good way to add to your layers when you're outside, but not active. For me, that's photographing cold lacrosse games in early spring and night football in late fall. Walking the sidelines is not enough energy to stay warm.
Not as valuable if you're outside and more active, like shoveling snow.

Picked up an "overnighter" package for an overnight hike. Wanted to use the handwarmers in my gloves on day 2 when the temps were in the single digits. Despite repeated shaking, and leaving them in the gloves for 10-15 minutes while we packed up, they barely got warm. An hour and a half into the hike I pulled them out because they weren't worth the added bulk.
They did finally get almost hot after 3-4 hours in the top of my backpack on the ride home.
