Comments about Eastern Mountain Sports EMS Boreal 40° Sleeping Bag:
Bought to use on a backpacking trip in canyon country in Utah. En route spent one night in the lowish mountains of sw colorado. Temp got down to 38 degrees that night - even with long underwear, jacket, hat and two pairs of socks (and sleeping in the truck) I was freezing, and I'm a warm sleeper. Even in the canyons, where it got down into the mid 50s, this was borderline too cold for the bag. Bottom line - this isn't a 40 degree bag, and EMS should not be advertising it as such. This will be my last purchase from them.

Comments about Eastern Mountain Sports EMS Boreal 40° Sleeping Bag:
I have had the Boreal 40 for about three years now. Not much has changed (except color) because EMS has perfected this bag. I do not give many 5 star ratings but this bag deserves every star. So here are my pros.
1. This bag is ultra-light. I am an ultra light backpacker, every ounce matters. At 2lbs this bag easily takes away any weight you are trying to shave off. There is also a built in stuff sack so you do not have to bother with bring one with you. Remember, every ounce matters if you are trying to go ultra-light.
2. ROOMY. As great as they are, mummy bags are not the most comfortable. The Boreal 40 is mixture between a mummy bag and rectangular bag. There is plenty of room to kick and move your legs around. In addition, the bag unzips and opens to one enormous blanket.
3. All purpose bag. Because of the design of this bag, it can serve for multiple uses. I personally use this for backpacking, car camping, sporting events, etc. Oh, and there is a pouch in the top "hood" where your can shove your clothes into and make a pillow. Really cool.
4. EMS quality. I always go for the big name brands but the EMS brand is one brand that I have never had an issue with. They provide prestige quality and produce a product is geared to the professional outdoors person. Trust me on this, EMS will never let you down and will always have your back if something goes wrong.
I must clear up issues from previous reviews. This is considered a "summer" bag. I am a hot sleeper so I am able to stretch the use of this bag into late Spring and early Fall when I go backpacking into the Whites. This bag will keep you warm, but before you pack for a trip you should always consider if you are a warm or cold sleeper/ the weather reports.
Finally, I must note that in 3 years I have not had one issue with this bag. I have no cons to mention. Amazing all purpose bag

Comments about Eastern Mountain Sports EMS Boreal 40° Sleeping Bag:
I've had this bag for 5 years and it's done well. I use it mid may to mid september and combined with a good ground pad and occasionally my thermals it does the job ( if your looking for toasty warm this isn't the bag for you). The true beauty of this bag is it hardly weighs anything, takes up minimal space in my pack, and insulates when wet.

Merchant response: We appreciate your review and are following up with our Product Managers. Sleeping bag ratings are rather subjective, and personally I think of a “40 degree” bag as a sleeping bag that will “get me though” a 40 degree night. In addition humans have different metabolic rates. I always recommend people start looking at sleeping bags (regardless of brand-name) that are rated to 15 degrees warmer than the coldest temps you think you might encounter (making your 55 degree comment spot on in my opinion). Regardless, your complete satisfaction with your EMS purchase is our first priority, so I would encourage you to return the bag via our Return Policy and find a bag more suitable for you! If you would like some alternative suggestions I can certainly help. Specifically our Boreal 20 degree is available in both men’s and women’s sizes and is time tested and well liked by staff and customer’s. If there is anything else I can do for you please let me know!
