The outer pocket is large enough for my offduty carry. (Full size glock) I use it for patrol everyday. Shoulder padding is very comfortable too.

IMHO, this is by far the best combination daypack/hydration pack on the market today. I did a lot of research before deciding on this one and have been very pleased with my purchase. The quality is great, it is very comfortable, and has a large capacity. Great pack for day trips, short or extended camping trips, or long bike rides.
