Comments about KELTY Trekker 65 Backpack:

This was an extremely comfortable and flexible pack. My friend has an old-school Tioga by Kelty and I got this Trekker after having 2 uncomfortable internal-frame packs. I have collar bone and shoulder issues and with this pack, I didn't even feel them (as I struggled with Osprey and North Face packs).
I brought supplies and a tent for a trek along the Na Pali Coast, altogether about 40 lbs. and it carried extremely well, very comfortable. I will admit that because I'm smaller, I had to tighten waist straps and to their limit and some more variability there would be nice.
One of the clips popped open when I was tightening it, which made me nervous, but has since not given me any issue.

I hope I can fit a bear canister in it, but that remains to be tested.

For the price (I bought mine for under 100$ on an EMS sale) and flexibility in cargo storage this pack offers, this was a helluva good purchase. I wish there were more external packs available, and I wish that Kelty would remain invested in the quality of their old standbys.

Comments about KELTY Trekker 65 Backpack:

Having spent a lot of time and $$$ on packs over the years, I am a big fan of external frames for backpacking over maintained trails, and this is a good one. Kelty and others have made packs like this for a long time, and all that experience makes the Trekker very good indeed. This pack is well designed, well made, adjustable, strong, light, comfortable all day, and roomy. The air space behind your back makes it much cooler than internal frames. Not quite as good a buy as it used to be but still a solid value, especially on sale. Although Kelty has tried to make the Trekker as attractive as possible with coatings, fabrics, and colors, it still looks old school like any external frame. Who cares? It works. Unless you're clinging to narrow ledges, scrambling up slopes, bushwhacking, or alpine mountaineering; in other words, if you're hiking on regular trails like most backpackers, this is the way to go. Twenty-four hours or the first big hill from the trailhead, no one cares where your pack's frame is. I just hope that Kelty keeps on making 'em.

    Almost the Original Kelty Frame

Comments about KELTY Trekker 65 Backpack:

I bought this frame because the Tioga I bought several years ago carried very poorly with a load of 35 lbs. I've taken the waist belt, shoulder straps, and back webbing from the Trekker and used them on an old "classic" Kelty c. 1970 -- Red bag, hold open frame, minimal waist belt. Now this old Kelty carries really well.

I'm working with Kelty to replace the parts from the Trekker or find similar parts for the old Kelty frame. I hope to have a funtioning Trekker, but the frame may need to be bent so it carries like the old one with the weight pushing me forward.

The Trekker bag is a reasonable size and I like the external pockets.

Eventually, I hope the Trekker will replace the old Kelty frame.

I still wish Kelty would just make a new version of the "classic" frame.
