Comments about Eastern Mountain Sports EMS Boda 40 Conversion Pack:
Exactly the size I was looking for. I wanted something close to the maximum domestic carry on size (22 x 14 x 9). This fits the bill nicely with a 43L advertised capacity. The pack is comfortable to wear, especially with the hip belt. Great value compared to other convertible carry-on bags in this same range.
Outside pocket: the front panel has an open pocket with a diagonal opening for stashing magazines. No zipper or velcro on this one.
Front organizer: Lockable YKK zipper is a nice touch. Nice mesh pocket for 3-1-1 bag, good set of pockets for organization, including a tablet pocket. Of note, it doesn't fit a 15in. laptop. Includes a key clip.
Top "quick access" pocket: soft fabric lined pocket at top of bag - perfect for sunglasses, phone, or other fragile / quick acccess items.
Main compartment: roughly 70/30 split "clamshell" suitcase design. The lid gets a zippered divider, looks to be about 2-3 inches deep when totally full. The main compartment is capacious, looks about 5-6 inches deep. A few other pockets here. The main compartment is just wide enough to hold a padded full-frame DSLR case and padded zoom lens case, so I'm glad I'll get to use this as a way to hold my tech gear and my clothes.
Build quality: Sturdy YKK zippers throughout (I wish they had zipper pulls, but those are easily added). Stitching looks high quality. I haven't been able to travel test this yet for longterm durability. Handles on the top and side (for suitcase-style carry) are padded and comfy.
Convertible straps: backpack and hip straps have thick padding, comfortable. adjustable sternum strap. Of note: this bag does not have a separate shoulder strap.
Styling: I wanted something relatively square to maximize volume. I think this bag hits the sweet spot between functional/rugged and stylish. I would, for example, be comfortable using this as a carry on for a business trip.
To me, the best thing about these carry-on convertible backpacks is that they can hold as much as a standard rolling carry-on in a smaller size (by eliminating wheels, extending handles, and other space-occupying plastic bits). It's also much lighter: this bag is only about 2.5 lbs. This would make a great bag for the "one bag" traveller.
I could easily have spent 2-3 times as much on a convertible carry-on and, in fact, found the Boda 40 when I was looking at two other alternatives in my local EMS. I'm very glad I came across this product.
