Future Consciousness

Call it Common Courtesy. Call it Trail Etiquette. At Eastern Mountain Sports, we call it Future Consciousness—our company-wide commitment to protecting the places where we love to play through stewardship and community action.

It was Future Consciousness that inspired us to change our company anniversary into a service day for our entire organization. Each year on the third Tuesday of September, we delay the opening of every one of our stores until 2 PM (as well as our corporate headquarters) so all of our employees can participate in organized conservation projects in their local communities. In addition to this annual service day, every Eastern Mountain Sports employee gets an additional paid day off to devote to community service. Employee involvement is an essential part of Future Consciousness, and no one is more involved in conservation issues than our CEO, Will Manzer. A regular participant in The Conservation Alliance’s lobbying trips to Washington, DC, Will has a very deep and personal passion for stewardship.

Under Will’s leadership, Eastern Mountain Sports became a Pinnacle Member of The Conservation Alliance as well as a $500,000 contributor to Conservation Alliance's Legacy Fund. Each of our stores partners with local conservation groups for both volunteer opportunities as well as to drive customer awareness about the group’s actions and events.
