Upper West Side Location Marks Second Store in NYC, Serving Urban Outdoor Athletes

PETERBOROUGH, N.H. (January 21, 2011) - Eastern Mountain Sports, one of the nation's largest outdoor retailers specializing in outdoor gear, apparel, footwear, and accessories, today announced it will open a new store on the Upper West Side of Manhattan this fall at 76th and Broadway. The 13,000 square-foot store will provide its respected, authentic service to the community's outdoor enthusiasts, while taking advantage of its proximity to Central Park and the wide array of outdoor activities that take place throughout the year. The store will showcase apparel and gear for cycling, kayaking, backpacking, camping, climbing, hiking, snowshoeing and skiing. In addition, Eastern Mountain Sports' signature services will include expert bike and ski technicians, foot gurus for personalized fittings, a paddlesport section, and a comprehensive travel-planning library.

"Today marks an important milestone for Eastern Mountain Sports, as we return to the Upper West Side of Manhattan," said Will Manzer, CEO. "As a retailer that's been serving outdoor athletes and enthusiasts in the Northeast for more than 40 years, New York has always been a very important market to us. This new location, which will be a much larger, two-level store, is located in the heart of the neighborhood where our customers live. Being part of the neighborhood has always been important for us and will enable us to deepen our roots in a market where we have been for 27 years."

The Upper West Side store will have extensive offerings for kayaking, cycling, climbing, running and trail running. The selection of gear and apparel includes Eastern Mountain Sports' proprietary products such as its outerwear layering system SYNC and Techwick®, its versatile, moisture management base layer and new apparel brands such as Icebreaker and Smartwool.

Eastern Mountain Sports named "Official Outfitter" of the Observatory

NORTH CONWAY, NH (January 3, 2011) - 6,288-foot Mount Washington is known around the world for its horrific weather conditions. Since its founding in 1932, meteorologists at Mount Washington Observatory have studied and documented the mountain's weather, venturing out into the elements on an hourly basis to collect data and maintain the station's weather instruments. Through a new, multi-year partnership, they will now face the "world's worst weather" in gear provided by Eastern Mountain Sports.

Eastern Mountain Sports, Inc., one of the nation's largest outdoor retailers, is now the official outfitter of Mount Washington Observatory. Under this agreement, Eastern Mountain Sports will provide gear and apparel for the Observatory's mountaintop weather observers. In addition, Eastern Mountain Sports will help to support and promote the Observatory's education and community outreach efforts.

"Mount Washington Observatory is a natural fit for Eastern Mountain Sports," said Eastern Mountain Sports CEO Will Manzer. "Not only is Mount Washington the ultimate outdoor experience in the northeast, it's the ultimate proving ground for the EMS brand and our promise of guaranteed performance."

"Education is fundamental to our mission," explained Scot Henley, Executive Director of Mount Washington Observatory. "With 65 retail locations from Maine to Virginia, Eastern Mountain Sports offers us the opportunity to share our knowledge with thousands of outdoor enthusiasts who respect nature every bit as much as they enjoy adventure."

The two New Hampshire-based organizations are familiar partners. For many years, guides from the Eastern Mountain Sports Climbing School, the oldest climbing school in the east, have run climbing and mountaineering training courses on the slopes of Mount Washington, including overnight educational programs at Mount Washington Observatory.

"As the official outfitter of the Mount Washington Observatory," Will Manzer added, "Eastern Mountain Sports is looking forward to showcasing the quality of our products in the most demanding conditions and providing our customers with exciting and inspiring content and experiences."

Eastern Mountain Sports and Mount Washington Observatory will kick off the partnership with launch events at Eastern Mountain Sports stores in North Conway, New Hampshire and New York City on February 10, 2011 from 6pm to 9pm. Both events will be open to the public. Mount Washington Observatory supporters and all Mount Washington enthusiasts are especially encouraged to attend.

Each event will feature a presentation with a live update from the summit of Mount Washington as well as the opportunity to meet Eastern Mountain Sports and Mount Washington Observatory staff members and other special guests. The first fifty guests at each event will receive exclusive gifts and every attendee can enter to win great prizes such as overnight trips to the Observatory with the Eastern Mountain Sports Climbing School, Observatory memberships and framed prints from legendary adventurer and photographer Bradford Washburn.

There are probably few more infuriating moments in the life of an avid cyclist than seeing someone else ride down the street on your wheels. Well, thanks to Boston Bikes, you can now experience that moment without the rage.

Ground-breaking Event Will Empower Young Americans to Champion the Outdoors

Peterborough, NH (May 6, 2010) - The search is on! Eastern Mountain Sports today announced that it will sponsor an Outdoor Nation Delegation of young leaders who will travel to New York City to be part of the ground-breaking Outdoor Nation Youth Summit and Festival in Central Park. The event will span two days, June 19 and 20, and for the first time bring together young Americans from across the country to reclaim, redefine and rediscover the outdoors. Eastern Mountain Sports is looking for those young leaders who will commit to championing the outdoors -- as athletes, artists, advocates and ambassadors. Target markets include Portsmouth NH, Dulles VA, Burlington VT, Buffalo NY, and Cambridge (Boston) MA. Interested individuals (ages 18 - 30) are encouraged to visit www.outdoornation.org/ems and complete the application by May 20, 2010.

Ground-breaking and game-changing, the Outdoor Nation Youth Summit and Festival will not only provide a platform for young leaders to set an outdoor agenda and create youth-led solutions, but will also be a celebration of the active, outdoor lifestyle. On June 19 Outdoor Nation will turn Central Park into the ultimate, outdoor playground complete with concerts and cultural festivities, as well as activities such as kayaking, fishing, bouldering, bird watching and kite flying. In addition, Outdoor Nation will include a high profile Outdoor Career Fair that will enable young people, of all ages, to learn about outdoor career paths as well as get information about specific employment opportunities.

"Young people today have considerable power and influence - politically, socially and financially - and are developing new ways to coordinate, collaborate and communicate for the issues they care about. For the first time, through Outdoor Nation, youth are being empowered to become leaders on campuses and in communities -- championing the outdoors and outdoor issues," said Chris Fanning, executive director of The Outdoor Foundation.

Through entertainment, education, engagement and action, Outdoor Nation and its community of "Outsiders" will work to dramatically increase and expand youth participation and engagement, especially among urban communities and communities of color - resulting in a healthier, more active generation. This effort comes at a time when youth are disconnected from the outdoors - resulting in increases in child obesity, diabetes, ADHD, and depression. New York Magazine names Eastern Mountain Sports NYC-SoHo as Best Camping Gear - Best NY Shopping 2010!

New York Magazine
March 15-22, 2010

"EMS almost tripled its floor space when it opened this sprawling new store last spring, meaning there's now ample room to display the kayaks, ice picks, tents, and backpacks that promise outdoor adventure. But it's certainly not the only outfitter in town. Paragon has breadth of gear, while Patagonia has high-tech clothes. What distinguishes EMS is the passion and expertise of its staff, all avid outdoorspeople. You need a water filter for a camping trip? They'll ask about the details of the trip, then walk you through the merits of each one and never try to up-sell you. Chances are they've already hiked/biked/camped wherever you're going, so you might want to get some tips before you check out."
