Rock Climbing 101
LAKE PLACID, NEW YORK
If you’ve never rock climbed, or have been climbing indoors at a rock gym, this class is for you. We’ll go over the fundamentals of climbing and focus on giving you the knowledge to become a skilled and confident rock climber. You’ll learn about the relevant equipment, knots and terminology, and then we’ll move right into belaying, body position, footwork and working around the climbing site. The bulk of the day is spent putting these new skills to use on the cliff, with each climber able to get in a few climbs and descents. You will come away knowing what it is like to be a fully engaged and responsible member of a climbing party, and with a good measure of actual climbing time on the rock.
Notes: 1) Weather and conditions may inhibit us from covering all topics outlined in this course. Please be open to a flexible schedule. 2) Groups classes require a minimum enrollment of two people. If you are booking alone for a class your reservation is subject to change up until the last day if the minimum enrollment is not reached. If you have a flexible schedule and you do not mind being matched with other climbers for the day, joining a class is a great cost savings way to take a lesson. If you have a limited schedule, or you do not wish to be paired with other climbers, we strongly recommend booking a private lesson. Private lessons can be booked any day of the week and are guaranteed to run. For information about private reservations please call 800-310-4504 or click here.
Groups meet promptly at 8:30am at the Eastern Mountain Sports in Lake Placid. Click here for directions. In the morning you will meet your guide, sign a waiver form, and get fitted with climbing gear for the day. Once everyone is outfitted groups will leave straight for the trail head. The whole day will be spent outside so please dress appropriate for the weather. You should also bring enough food and water for the entire day and a backpack to carry items to the cliff. The day will end around 4:30pm back at EMS.
