New Paltz Gunks Climbing School

GARDINER (GUNKS), NY

The Gunks Climbing School is a tiny shop located right at the base of the mountain. The shop is attached to the BISTRO MOUNTAIN STORE, right across the street from the MOUNTAIN BRAUHAUS restaurant, and right down the road from the MOHONK PRESERVE and MINNEWASKA STATE PARK. We’ve packed the shop with all sorts of rock gear including ropes, harnesses, shoes, helmets, carabiners, chalk, slings, rock protection, and more. Climbers often stop by after grabbing a sandwich at the Bistro Mountain Store or on their way up to the crag for some last minute gear shopping. Hikers also enjoy stopping in for recommendations on where to hike. Give us a call if you have any questions about the area, or check out our store on the way to the cliff.

Gunks climbing shop and Climbing School are located at the intersection of route 299 and 44/55, about 10 miles west of New Paltz. If you’re going to the Gunks from New Paltz or Gardiner, you’ll be passing our Climbing School & Store on the way. Give us a call on your drive up and we’ll let you know if we carry the items you’re looking for!

Gear Rentals

There are no fees for rentals if you are climbing with the EMS Climbing School. All technical climbing gear is included with your lesson. For safety reasons we do not rent out harnesses, helmets, ropes, or climbing hardware to the public. This gear can only be used under the supervision of an EMS climbing instructor and is included with your climbing lesson.

*Minnewaska Lodge guests receive $5 off any rental price above. Some gear is only available to rent after Climbing School needs have met. If the rental is for more than one consecutive day, we’ll give you a discount for each day after the first day. Hiking, Snowshoeing & Cross Country Skiing Hiking, Snowshoeing, and Cross Country Skiing can be done at MINNEWASKA STATE PARK and the MOHONK PRESERVE.
